How to Protect yourself from West Nile Virus

If you are someone who doesn't feel comfortable putting DEET products on yourself, your children, or other family members, then The Insect Defend Patch is the way to go! Our product is THE natural way to help ensure that you stay protected from pesky mosquitos and harmful diseases, such as West Nile Virus.

When going outdoors during the time of year when WNV is most common among mosquitos, it is crucial that you protect yourself properly. Here are some ways to do so:

·         Reduce the length of time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn because this is the time of day when mosquitoes are most active.

·         Try to stay inside a screened-in patio or enclosure if possible.

·         Mosquitos are attracted to dark coloured clothing, so try and wear light colours and long sleeves to cover as much skin as possible.

·         When doing yard work, be sure to throw away any clippings, lawn shavings, raked leaves, etc. in a timely manner as to not attract mosquitos.

·         If you have a composter you should turn over the pile regularly and remove any dense waste so mosquitos are not attracted and don’t have anywhere to breed.

·         Moving water is unattractive to larvae, so try and have some sort of pond or fountain that keeps the surface water moving.

·         Be sure to change, empty, or turnover any rain barrels, bird baths, flowerpots, planters, swimming pools, and eaves troughs so there are no bugs attracted to them.

·         Some of the most common places for mosquitos to lay their eggs are in things like bird baths, unused containers/flower pots, clogged gutters, unused toys, swampy areas in the yard, and swimming pool covers, so keep them all clean or put away.

·         Make sure there are no holes in any door or window screens.

·         Try to attract their natural enemies by installing things like bird or bat houses and welcoming things like frogs, dragonflies, and beetles. This is also a very environmentally friendly option.

·         Do not wear or use anything with heavy scents. Showering before going outdoors should be done with scentless products, and things like perfumes and scented creams should not be applied.

·         Put an Insect Defend Patch on 2 hours before you will be going outside. It lasts for up to 36 hours and is waterproof, so it will not restrict you from the outdoor activities you love most!
Have fun and be safe!
