The mosquito that transmits these diseases was originally
called the vector mosquito, but they became extinct in 2000 and we now have
another kind of vector mosquito called the Aedes albopictus. There are no
yellow or dengue fever outbreaks in our country as these mosquitos live in
countries like Africa and South America. However, it is possible for people who
travel to these areas to contract either disease and import it to Canada.
Yellow Fever
A viral infection spread by mosquitos and most common in Africa
and South America. Anyone can get the disease, but elderly people have a higher
risk of developing a severe infection. If someone has contracted the “fever”,
symptoms usually start to develop 3-6 days after they are bitten.
